FOOD GRADE DECLARATION European Directive 2002/72/EC

By

What is Food Grade Declaration?

Food Grade Declaration is a document released from plastic raw material supplier stating that:

- all monomers, additives and other starting substances used in the production of article/material belong to 2002/72/EC (and successive amendments) approved list.

This declaration also must point out the eventual presence of monomers, additives or other sustances having specific limitations: SML or QM. This to allow to competent authority/laboratory to evaluate the respect of these limitations.

SML: Specific Migration Limit.
This parameter is evaluated during tests on finished form article. This means that substances subject to this limitation MUST NOT MIGRATE in the food simulantes in amount exceeding the fixed limit.

QM: Maximum Quantity allowed
This parameter is referred to substances potentially used during article's production. This means that supplier material should confirm that substances subject to this limitation DO NOT EXCEED the fixed limitation.

So, the food grade declaration is a fundamental step in defining an article designed to contact food substances IN COMPLIANCE to European Directive 2002/72/EC.
It's also important pointing out that also in presence of food grade declaration, test on finished form article are needed. This in order to verify the compliance with OVERALL MIGRATION LIMIT and eventually SPECIFIC MIGRATION LIMIT as specified in European Directive 2002/72/EC.
