Multi-layers Plastic Materials designed to Food Contact - European Directive 2002/72/EC

By

Regarding multi-layers articles, the European Directive 2002/72/EC explains clearly that:

It does not regards materials or articles constituted by two or more layers that does not consist exclusively of plastic, regardless of whether the layer in direct contact with food is exclusively plastic.

This means that plastic used in multi-layer articles, such as articles containing plastic layer and paper films or metal layers or others, are not covered by European Directive. This kind of articles is subjected only to general safety requirements established in all European Member State and eventually to specific national legislation requirement, if present.

Generally, in the Member State where a specific requirement is not established, these articles can be marketed demonstrating that they are safe for their intended use and they do not cause problems to odour and taste of food contained. Some Member State, such as France and Austria in example, provides specific approve lists of starting substances (depending on kind of layer) .
